The United States is optimistic that Israel will agree to a proposed ceasefire plan in Gaza, contingent upon Hamas’s acceptance. This development comes as international pressure mounts to end the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in significant casualties and destruction.

“We’re waiting for an official response from Hamas,” a US official stated, highlighting the critical role of Hamas in moving forward with the peace initiative. The official added that the US hopes both sides will agree to start the plan’s first phase “as soon as possible.”

The proposed ceasefire plan involves a multi-phase approach to de-escalate tensions and lay the groundwork for a more comprehensive peace agreement. In the initial phase, both sides are expected to halt hostilities, allowing humanitarian aid to reach affected areas and providing relief to civilians trapped in the conflict zone.

The US official emphasized the importance of the ceasefire as a starting point, noting that subsequent phases would require further negotiations.

“After the initial ceasefire, the two sides would sit down and try to negotiate what phase two could look like and when that could begin,”

the official explained. This phased approach aims to build trust between the conflicting parties and create a conducive environment for lasting peace talks.

Israel has previously expressed skepticism about ceasefires, citing concerns over Hamas’s intentions and the group’s history of breaking previous agreements. However, the current plan includes specific mechanisms to monitor compliance and address violations, which could help alleviate some of Israel’s apprehensions.

On the other hand, Hamas’s response remains uncertain. The group’s leadership has indicated a willingness to consider ceasefire proposals but has also set conditions that might complicate negotiations. These conditions include lifting the blockade on Gaza and ensuring the protection of Palestinian rights.

International actors, including the United Nations and the European Union, have welcomed the US-led initiative, urging both sides to seize the opportunity to end the violence. The broader international community views the ceasefire as a crucial step towards stabilizing the region and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on Hamas’s official response. The success of the ceasefire plan hinges on the willingness of both Israel and Hamas to engage in constructive dialogue and make concessions for the sake of peace. The US remains hopeful that the plan will pave the way for a sustainable resolution to the long-standing conflict.
