Prime Minister Robert Fico is in a severe but stable condition after being shot in what authorities are calling a targeted attack. The incident occurred late Wednesday evening, sending shockwaves through the nation and prompting an outpouring of support and concern for the leader’s recovery.
Fico, 59, was reportedly leaving a government building in the capital city when he was attacked. Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing the Prime Minister collapse before security personnel quickly intervened and rushed him to the hospital.
Dr Martina Kovacova, head of the medical team treating Fico at the University Hospital in Bratislava, provided an update on his condition during a press conference.
Prime Minister Fico’s condition is severe,
she stated.
We are doing everything possible to ensure he receives the best possible care.
Despite the severity of his injuries, doctors are cautiously optimistic about his chances of recovery.
I guess that at the end, he will survive,
Dr. Kovacova added, noting that while Fico remains in intensive care, his vital signs have stabilized.
The shooting has sparked a significant police investigation, with authorities working around the clock to identify and apprehend the assailant. Interior Minister Jan Hamacek emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating,
This is an attack not only on Prime Minister Fico but on the democratic stability of our country. We will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice.
Security measures have been heightened across Slovakia, with increased police presence at key government buildings and public spaces. President Zuzana Čaputová addressed the nation, urging calm and unity in the face of this violent act.
We stand together in solidarity with Prime Minister Fico and his family during this difficult time,
she said.
Violence has no place in our society, and we must remain resolute in our commitment to peace and democracy.
Political leaders worldwide have expressed their support for Fico and condemned the attack. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted,
I am deeply shocked by the news of the attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico. My thoughts are with him and his loved ones. Violence and hate must never prevail.
As Slovakia awaits further updates on Fico’s condition, the nation remains hopeful for his recovery and resolute in its pursuit of justice.
